Maui 5-Day Itinerary: Haleakalā, Road to Hana, and the Best Beaches

Five days on Maui allows you to experience the island's three defining experiences, Haleakalā, the Road to Hana, and Maui's water, without feeling rushed. This itinerary is built around those anchors and fills in the best supporting activities around them. Book the Haleakalā sunrise permit (recreation.gov) and any snorkeling tours before anything else; both sell out well in advance.

Day 1: South Maui and arrival

Most visitors fly into Kahului Airport (OGG). Pick up your rental car and drive south to your base. Kīhei and Wailea on the southwest coast are the most convenient bases for most of this itinerary: reliably sunny, close to beaches, and central for driving to both Haleakalā and West Maui.

Spend the afternoon at Wailea or Mākena Beach. Mākena State Park (Big Beach) has one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on Maui. Little Beach, a short hike around the point, is clothing-optional and draws a festive crowd on Sunday afternoons. Sunset from this coast is excellent. Dinner in Kīhei town: more affordable than Wailea and with a good range of local restaurants.

Day 2: Haleakala sunrise

Haleakalā summit sits at 10,023 feet. Sunrise requires arriving before dawn, which means leaving your South Maui base around 3:00-3:30 am depending on time of year. The drive takes 1.5-2 hours from Kīhei. Bring warm layers: temperatures at the summit are 30-40°F (0-5°C) at sunrise. The sunrise permit from recreation.gov covers entry during the 3-7 am window.

After sunrise, explore the summit area: the crater overlooks are remarkable in the early morning light, and the Sliding Sands Trail into the crater is one of Hawaii's best hikes. Allow 2-3 hours at the summit before driving down. On the return, stop for breakfast in the upcountry town of Makawao and browse the galleries and boutiques. Afternoon: rest day back at the beach or snorkeling at the reef off Mākena.

Day 3: Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a full-day commitment. Leave your base by 6:30-7:00 am to reach the early stops before crowds. The highway follows the northeast coast of Maui through 64 miles of rainforest, waterfall hikes, and coastal viewpoints. Key stops: Twin Falls (early morning), Garden of Eden Arboretum, Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach State Park (reservation required at dlnr.hawaii.gov), the Fagan Memorial cross above Hana town, and the 'Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) if you have timed entry.

Plan to turn around at Hana or continue the full loop around the Kīpahulu coast (unpaved sections; check rental car agreement for road restrictions). Return via the same route or the south loop. Most visitors are back at their base by 7-8 pm. Eat in Hana town for lunch; options are limited but the Hana Ranch Restaurant is reliable.

Day 4: West Maui

Morning: Molokini Crater snorkeling tour departing from Māʻalaea Harbor. Tours typically depart 6:30-7:30 am and return by noon. Molokini is a half-submerged volcanic crater 2.5 miles off South Maui with exceptional clarity. Book with operators like Pacific Whale Foundation or Trilogy Excursions. This is the best snorkeling day of the trip.

Afternoon: Drive north to Lāhainā. The historic Front Street waterfront area was significantly damaged in the August 2023 wildfire; check current conditions before visiting as the town is in active recovery. Ka'anapali Beach to the north is open and one of Maui's most scenic stretches of sand, with the Pu'u Kekaʻa (Black Rock) headland and good snorkeling at its base.

Day 5: Upcountry and departure

A lighter day if you have an afternoon or evening flight. Upcountry Maui (Kula, Makawao, and the slopes of Haleakalā) is cooler and greener than the coast. The Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm and Surfing Goat Dairy offer tours. Makawao's galleries and Komoda Store and Bakery (get there early for cream puffs) are worth a stop.
