Hawaii in September: Best Value Month of the Year
September is the best-kept secret in Hawaii travel. Summer crowds are gone, prices drop significantly, and the weather and ocean remain excellent. Here is everything to know.
September is the month that frequent Hawaii travelers look forward to most. School is back, summer crowds have evaporated, and hotels and airlines respond immediately with lower prices. The weather is nearly as good as August, the ocean is still at peak warmth, and you can often walk into a restaurant without a wait. If you have flexibility on dates, September is the month to go.
Weather in September
September conditions are excellent: daytime highs average 85-88°F (29-31°C), ocean temperature stays at 79-80°F (26-27°C), and trade winds are generally reliable. Rain on windward coasts begins picking up slightly toward late September as the trade wind pattern starts giving way to more variable conditions, but leeward coasts remain reliably sunny. Sunset is around 6:30 pm and getting earlier.
Crowds and prices
September is when Hawaii's shoulder season truly begins. Visitor numbers drop sharply after Labor Day weekend. Prices for flights, accommodation, and rental cars can be 20-40% lower than the July peak. Availability is much better, including at popular activities and restaurants. September highlights
Aloha Festivals: The Aloha Festivals, held across all islands from September into October, are the largest celebration of Hawaiian culture in the state. Events include the Royal Court Presentation, floral parades, ho'olaule'a (community celebrations), and live music and hula performances. See our culture guide for context.
Ocean and water activities: The ocean in September is at its warmest and clearest. Snorkeling, diving, and kayaking conditions are excellent with lower crowds at popular sites.
Hiking: September temperatures and low rain make it one of the best months for longer hikes. The Kalalau Trail on the Nā Pali Coast and crater hikes at Haleakalā are wonderful in September.
