Hawaii in October: Shoulder Season Value and the Ironman
October is one of Hawaii's best-value months. Summer crowds are gone, prices have dropped, the weather is still warm, and the Big Island hosts the Ironman World Championship.
October is an excellent month to visit Hawaii. The summer rush is definitively over, prices for flights, accommodation, and rental cars are noticeably lower than July or August, and the weather is still warm and pleasant. The main exception is the Ironman Triathlon World Championship week in Kailua-Kona, which fills the Big Island's west coast with athletes and spectators and drives up local accommodation prices significantly.
Weather in October
October marks the transition from Hawaii's drier summer to its wetter winter pattern. Daytime temperatures average 83-86°F (28-30°C). Leeward coasts are still reliably sunny; windward coasts see increasing rain. Ocean temperature is 78-79°F (25-26°C), still excellent for swimming and snorkeling. Trade winds become less consistent in October, which can result in warmer, more humid conditions on some days (called Kona weather). Sunset is around 6:00 pm.
Halloween on Oʻahu, particularly in Waikīkī's Kalākaua Avenue, draws large crowds for street celebrations. If you are staying in Waikīkī that weekend, expect noise and activity until very late.
Crowds and prices
Outside Ironman week on the Big Island (mid-October), crowds across Hawaii are at shoulder season levels. This is one of the best windows to visit Maui and Kauaʻi with lower prices and shorter waits at popular attractions. October highlights
Ironman World Championship (Big Island, mid-October): Even if you are not racing or supporting a racer, watching the Ironman is a remarkable spectacle. Athletes finish the marathon section on Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona through the night, and the finish line atmosphere is charged. Tickets are not required to watch from the street.
Aloha Festivals (continuing from September): Cultural events continue across the islands through October. The ho'olaule'a community celebrations and floral parades feature live music, hula, and local food.
