August is Hawaii's warmest month and still fully in peak season. Ocean conditions are at their best, temperatures are highest, and the back-to-school exodus begins mid-month.
August is Hawaii's warmest month and the peak of ocean temperature. Water clarity and warmth are at their annual best, making it arguably the finest month for swimming and snorkeling. The downside is continued peak-season pricing and crowds, at least through mid-August when mainland schools start returning. The second half of August begins a gradual easing that accelerates in September.
Weather in August
August is the hottest month in Hawaii. Coastal temperatures average 87-90°F (31-32°C) in the afternoon, though trade winds make this feel more comfortable than inland destinations at similar temperatures. Ocean temperature peaks at around 80°F (27°C), the warmest of the year. Rain is at annual lows across all islands. Evening temperatures are warm: 72-75°F (22-24°C) at sea level. It is genuinely hot, but Hawaii's ocean breezes make it manageable.
Crowds and prices
Early August is still peak pricing. From around August 15 onward, as mainland schools resume, visitor numbers begin dropping and you may find better availability on short notice. Rental cars are still in demand through the month, so book ahead. The most popular beaches are crowded on weekends throughout August.
August highlights
Ocean conditions: August has the warmest, clearest water of the year. Snorkeling at top sites like Molokini, Hanauma Bay, and Kealakekua Bay is exceptional. Sea turtles are frequently spotted at sandy beaches.
